Digital Fantasy Painting of Fairy Moon Child

Mommy, make me a fairy

“Mommy, make me a fairy. Please?”
The last thing I wanted to do was spend more time on the computer. But looking at my daughters’ pleading eyes, I couldn’t resist. So we dreamed. What kind of fairy woud she be? Would she have a tiara? What magic would she have? (She needed magic to battle a mean witch and once she’d win that battle, she’d get a badge. Of course she’d win – she had a fairy cat at her side! )
She giggled and posed for me to snap a few pictures, then sat by me, patiently (okay, maybe not so patiently), directing the image. We did disagree on a few points – like what color the magic sparkles should be, and what kind of dress a moon fairy would have. The yellow she originally chose just didn’t work, but moon colors fit better.
I worked while listening to my daughter tell the story of the witch and the fairy cat. Once I was done, she requested a print for her room and Flight of Fancy was born.

About Me

I am Fiona Jayde – an award winning book cover designer… who can’t draw. At least not on paper. I was working on a fantasy book cover when my daughter requested I turn her into a fairy. Now she requests to turn her into “flight of fancy” every time I take out my phone to snap pictures.

When I’m pried away from the computer, I can be found playing with my girls, practicing piano or martial arts, discussing astronomy, Star Wars and defensive tactics with my oldest while keeping the youngest from climbing on yet another bookcase; and teaching myself not to burn water for dinner because even magic can’t help a meal that’s gone dry.
